1998 Outstanding Young Animal/Dairy Scientist Awards


The Midwestern Section of the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) and Midwest Branch of the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) offer Awards for Young Animal Science Leaders to be presented at the ASAS/ADSA Midwest Annual Meeting each year. Details for nominations are mailed to the membership prior to each meeting.

The general requirements for eligibility and specific requirements for nomination for each of the four awards are as follows.

General Requirements

  1. A nominee for a Midwest award must be a member of the ASAS or ADSA and of the respective Midwestern Section or Branch.
  2. A nominee must not have reached his/her 40th birthday by the nomination deadline and must not have received a national ASAS, ADSA, PSA, or AMSA award in the same area.
  3. A nominee must be living at the time of nomination.
  4. Only one (1) nominee per institution will be accepted for each award. Each award will consist of a check in the amount of $500, an appropriate plaque and recognition at the Midwest Annual Meeting.
  5. Each nomination dossier must be accompanied by three (3) copies of the completed Midwest ASAS/ADSA Nomination Form and six (6) copies of other materials. Each copy of the nominee's materials should be stapled or held together with paper clips, not bound in notebook form.
  6. The items listed in the "Materials to be submitted by the nominator" section for each award constitute the only items permitted in the nomination dossier. Dossiers containing additional items or not following length limitations will not be considered.

Midwest ASAS/ADSA Outstanding Young Researcher Award

A nominee must have made an outstanding contribution in research in animal/dairy science. The research must have pertained to the following classes of animals: (a) beef cattle, (b) dairy cattle, (c) horses, (d) sheep, (e) swine or (f) poultry. The research must have been related to some phase of breeding, feeding, management, nutrition, growth and development, physiology, milk production, muscle biology or meats of the animals listed above, and must have direct importance to their production.

Materials to be submitted by the nominator:

  1. Three (3) copies of the completed Midwest ASAS/ADSA Awards Nomination Form.
  2. Six (6) copies of the application dossier, which includes:
    1. biography of the nominee, which must not exceed one [1] double-spaced printed page when printed in Courier 12 or greater.
    2. a list of the nominee's publications concerning the research upon which the nomination is based.
    3. a summary statement describing the importance to the livestock industry of the work upon which the nomination is based. This statement must not be more than three [3] double-spaced printed pages in length.
    4. letters of reference from no more than three persons familiar with the nominee's research but who are, at the time of the nomination, affiliated with an institution, firm or organization other than that of the nominee.

Midwest ASAS/ADSA Outstanding Young Extension Specialist Award

The nominee must:

  1. have conducted outstanding extension educational programs in animal/dairy science.
  2. be actively engaged in outreach education as an extension specialist employed by a state (provincial) or federal extension service at the time of nomination.
  3. work with people who produce or use either dairy cattle, beef cattle, swine, sheep, horses, or with people in the meat industry.
  4. have initiated and developed programs and projects concerning breeding, milk production, nutrition, management, growth and development, physiology, muscle biology/meats, health, youth livestock programs or activities directly related to the meat animal industry.

Basis for selection:

  1. acceptance and application of nominee's concepts, techniques, and programs.
  2. influence of projects and programs on the livestock industry and the welfare of farm people.
  3. leadership qualities demonstrated by ability to influence others to act and to adopt improved practices.
  4. mastery of subject matter, techniques, vision, enthusiasm and attitude.

Materials to be submitted by the nominator:

  1. Three [3] copies of the completed Midwest ASAS/ADSA Awards Nomination Form.
  2. Six [6] copies of the application dossier, which includes:
    1. biography of the nominee, which must not exceed one [1] double-spaced printed page when printed in 12-point Courier or greater print.
    2. statements addressing each of the topics mentioned under "Basis for Selection" (above). The length of these statements combined must not exceed three [3] double-spaced printed pages when printed in 12-point Courier or greater.
    3. list of materials developed or published by the nominee. The list should include items used in teaching animal/dairy science to a wide audience, including interpretive writing, visual aids, computer software, and other contributions. Grant monies generated may be included.
    4. letters of reference (2 minimum, 5 maximum). One letter from the nominee's institution is required.

Midwest ASAS/ADSA Outstanding Young Teacher Award

A nominee must have performed in an outstanding manner as a teacher of Animal/Dairy Science. A nominee must be actively engaged in teaching at the time of nomination.

Materials to be submitted by the nominator:

  1. Three (3) copies of the completed Midwest ASAS/ADSA Awards Nomination Form.
  2. Six (6) copies of the application dossier, which includes:
    1. biography of the nominee, which must not exceed one (1) double-spaced printed page when printed in 12-point Courier or greater.
    2. Statements addressing the following, but not to exceed three (3) double-spaced printed pages when printed in 12-point Courier or greater:
      1. the nominee's ability to motivate and stimulate students.
      2. the impression made upon students by the nominee's mastery of subject, technique, vision and attitude.
      3. evidence of the nominee's interest in the improvement of teaching.
      4. the content and nature of the courses taught by the nominee, with emphasis on responsibilities in organization of teaching materials, original contributions to the course and ability to translate research findings into terms of useful practice.
      5. diversification of the nominee's activities, such as student counseling; student training or placement; student club advising; service on department, college or university committees; and research or extension activities. (A nominee need not be active in all of these areas.)
      6. the nominee's extracurricular activities beyond normal teaching activities.
      7. the nominee's service to agriculture and related industries.
    3. letters in support of the nomination from not less than five (5) nor more than ten (10) of the nominee's current or former students.

Midwest ASAS/ADSA Outstanding Young Agribusiness Award

The nominee must:

  1. have demonstrated significant effect on the products and/or services marketed by their employer.
  2. show evidence of the application of scientific principles and knowledge, and originality in the contributions.
  3. have demonstrated leadership relative to scientific matters in the animal/dairy industry beyond their employer.
  4. have developed/offered products and/or services based on sound concepts deemed to be acceptable under peer review.
  5. have demonstrated the ability to communicate with and influence others to support the products and/or services developed.
  6. be employed in animal agribusiness at time of nomination.

Materials to be submitted by the nominator:

  1. Three (3) copies of the completed Midwest ASAS/ADSA Awards Nomination Form.
  2. Six (6) copies of the application dossier, which includes:
    1. a letter of nomination from the nominator.
    2. a current résumé or curriculum vitae.
    3. letters of reference from three (3) persons with not more than one from the nominee's current employer.

All nominators are cautioned again that dossiers of nomination for any of these awards that do not conform to the requirements as stated above will not be considered by the selection committees of the Midwest ASAS/ADSA.
