DAVID P. HOLZGRAEFE
David Holzgraefe was raised on a grain and livestock farm near Quincy, Illinois. He received his B.S. in Agricultural Science with honors in 1974 and his M.S. in Ruminant Nutrition in 1975 as a Jesse Hackett Fellow from the University of Illinois. He joined the staff of the University of Illinois Department of Animal Science in 1975 and served as an Assistant Animal Scientist at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Research Center from 1975-76 and the MoorMan Swine Research Center from 1976-78. In 1978, David accepted a position with The Navigators, an international, interdenominational Christian organization, serving as Assistant to the President. He returned to the University of Illinois in 1980 as a Lecturer in Swine Nutrition, teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in swine nutrition and management while completing his thesis research in sow nutrition. He received his Ph.D. in Swine Nutrition in 1984. In 1984, David joined Farmlands Industries as Manager of Swine Nutrition Research. From 1984 through 1994 he served Farmlands as a nutritionist, Manager of Research and Development and Director of Emerging Technologies. In 1994, he joined MoorMan's, Inc., as Senior Manager of Swine Nutrition and currently serves MoorMan's as Director of Research.
His research interests have focused on fiber utilization by swine, grain and animal by-product utilization by ruminants and non-ruminants and feed technology manufacturing application. He has coordinated and led the formation of several research and business development linkages between university and industry scientists and business leaders to enhance the commercialization of products for livestock and companion animals.
Dr. Holzgraefe is a member of the American Society of Animal Science and the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. He currently serves on the Nutrition Council of the American Feed Industry Association and the Nonruminant Nutrition Program Committee of the Midwestern Section, American Society of Animal Science.
David and his wife, Susan, reside in Quincy, Illinois with their three children, Brian, Krista and Kara.
JAMES R. MALES
Dr. Jim Males is Professor and Head of the Animal and Range Sciences Department at South Dakota State University. Prior to moving to South Dakota State Dr. Males was a faculty member in Animal Sciences at Washington State University. D. Males taught Beef Cattle Production and led a research effort in cow/calf nutrition and management. His primary research area was in the use of low-quality forages and by-product feeds for cattle. While at Washington State Dr. Males received the R. M. Wade award for Excellence in Teaching in 1985 and the Young Scientist Award from the Western Section of the American Society of Animal Science in 1986. Dr. Males received his B.S. degree from Pennsylvania State University, M.S. degree from Michigan State University and Ph.D. degree from The Ohio State University. In addition to his University duties, Dr. Males is the chair of Ag Unity s Animal Welfare Committee. Dr. Males and his wife, Marcia, have two sons, Jared and Josh.
